MMO games – fun for millions of players

With the rise of computer technologies and the internet, the popularity of games has risen as well. A large number of people have played at least one video-game in their lives. Many people fell in love with video-games the moment they started playing their very first game and they kept playing more and more games. There are many game genres, like MOBA games or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena games, FPS games or First-Person Shooter games, indie games or platform games mostly in 2D… One of the most popular types of games played online are MMO games or Massively Multiplayer Online games.

What are Massively Multiplayer Online Games?

Let us first discuss what Massively Multiplayer Online games are. As the name implies, they are online games played by a large number of players, sometimes hundreds to thousands, even millions, on the same server. They typically feature an open world where players can roam, but there are other features that make such games differ from one another.

It is obvious that MMO games are a lot of fun since they attract huge numbers of players. They usually have an experience system that requires you to level up in order to improve your character. MMO games with characters are called MMORPG or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games.

The origin of MMO games

The history of MMO games began around thirty years ago and, since then, a lot of MMO games have been released. MMO games originated from MUD games or Multi-User Dungeons games, such as Dungeons & Dragons which is one of the most popular MUD games.

How to play MMO games

In order to level up, you must roam the world and complete certain tasks. Although most of the tasks do not require you to interact with other players, there will be some players that want to complete the same task as you do. Therefore, trying to collect an item that is located in one place on the map may lead to fights between players at a similar level.

The game is quite fair and balanced. Players at the same level will have similar, if not exactly the same quests because it would be unfair to fight an opponent who has twice as much experience (XP) as you do. Imagine a situation in which you are trying to get gold and experience by killing some wild monsters in the open world, when you get interrupted or slain by someone who is so much ahead of you that all they need to do is press a button or two to completely defeat you. By keeping the quests similar, the game developers have managed to balance the game and make it fun for everyone.

Play with thousands or millions of players from all around the world

Most of these games are designed in such a way that you can level up forever. There are always some new tasks, new bosses to defeat, and new treasures to be found. In some of MMO games, such as World of Warcraft, you can even team up with your friends in order to complete a task that would be impossible to complete by a single player. The most exciting feature of MMO games is that they give you a chance to take part in massive battles against or with people from all around the world.
